The term rheumatism describes afflictions of the skeletomuscular system entailing flowing, tearing, or pulling pain and, in many cases, functional impairment. Rheumatism can afflict bones, muscles, organs, and fascia. Causes may be autoimmune disorders, degeneration, or metabolic disorders.
Following a detailed anamnesis, the diagnosis is supported by lab tests and, if necessary, radiological examination, CT and/or MRI scans as well as scintigraphy. An early diagnosis significantly increases the possibility that the disease may be treated effectively so that the patient may be spared unnecessary pain. Therapy usually includes medication as well as physiotherapy and other physical measures. Surgery or radiosynoviortheses are seldom necessary.
